Top Class Endemic Bird Tour that really delivered
My wife, Ashley, and I arranged an endemic bird tour through www.tropicalsplendor.com, and Janaka (or “J”, as he was happy to be called) was assigned as our guide. From the outset, J proved to be a warm, instantly likeable individual with a great sense of humour. We had already spent several days in Sri Lanka before beginning our eight-day tour, and J collected us from our hotel right on time — in fact, his punctuality was remarkable, having driven from his home very early that morning to meet us at 09:30. While we had some prior familiarity with Indian birds from two trips many years ago, we were very much looking forward to J’s expert guidance to help us reacquaint ourselves. It quickly became clear that J possesses extensive knowledge of Sri Lanka’s birdlife, complemented by a deep understanding of the country’s fascinating history, religions and cultures — and, of course, its food. Throughout the tour we enjoyed many engaging conversations covering wildlife, birds, food and Sri Lankan culture. Our main aim was to see as many endemic bird species as possible. As experienced birders, we had realistic expectations, fully aware that some species simply don’t show. Conditions were further complicated by an exceptionally dry spell in the highlands, with not a single drop of rain during our eight-day tour, resulting in limited feeding flocks. None of this deterred J. He is exceptionally well connected, personally knowing the best trackers and local people — some with access to private land — who helped locate some of the more difficult species. J’s passion for nature is clear, and he excels at ensuring his clients see as much as possible. Thanks to his dedication and skill, we managed to see every single endemic bird species, along with many excellent bonus birds! Along the way, J also pointed out numerous mammals, reptiles, plants, trees and flowers, greatly enriching the experience. Another aspect that J handled exceptionally well was adjusting the tour to accommodate my wife, who was recovering from a twisted and bruised ankle as well as a cold. He managed this with great care and flexibility, adapting plans where necessary without us missing out on anything at all — a truly wonderful skill and a real testament to his professionalism and thoughtfulness. In summary, J is a genuinely great person and an outstanding guide, with a superb eye not only for birds but for all of Sri Lanka’s remarkable wildlife.

Top notch birding in Sri Lanka
I had the pleasure of being guided by Janaka on a 10-day birding tour through all of the major hotspots in south and eastern Sri Lanka. In addition to all of the endemic bird species we got brilliant views of a leopard at close range in Yala National Park and a host of other exciting wildlife sightings. Janaka was an excellent companion throughout: passionate and knowledgeable about the birds, butterflies, reptiles, mammals and more, friendly, fluent in English and very accommodating. Excellent guide, driver and companion
Sisira has just given us a wonderful 10 day tour of Sri Lanka. His knowledge of the history of the country, the birds and wildlife was incredible. He spotted, and showed things to us, that we would have been completely unaware of without him. We thoroughly enjoyed our birdwatching walks, he knew every bird we saw and made sure we had a good sighting of every one. He was an excellent driver and we felt completely safe and comfortable with him at all times. We enjoyed his company and his advice and suggestions enhanced our holiday. Great trip! Our highest recommendations.
Our family of 5 had a fantastic 14 days in Sri Lanka. Our guide and driver, Sisira, did an excellent job of showing us all the best sights and places. He has extensive knowledge of animals, birds and nature. He really accommodated for our family in a great way answering all our questions and telling us so much about this beautiful country.
